It All Began in 1931
90 years ago, three Shumaker brothers, Bill, Fred and Gus founded the family business, Globe Creosote Company.
At the time road surfaces were often dirt or gravel. To better improve the roadways, chip and seal application became the standard process to create hard surface roadways.Globe crews installed chip and seal for counties and towns throughout the State of Indiana in the early years and up into the 1970’s.
In the late ‘30’s, the company founders purchased Heston Concrete Co. and State Sand and Gravel. Just after the end of WWII, in 1947, the three companies were combined and continued operation under the new name of Shumaker Bros. Industries Inc.
In the early 1950’s, Hot Mix Asphalt paving began to replace chip and seal for many road and parking lot applications. The Shumaker brothers expanded their operation to include the new technology.
Beginning in the late 50’s and for the following 30 years, Fritz Shumaker led the next generation of corporate management, fulfilling the family’s vision to create an industry leader in hot mix asphalt production and paving.
As Central Indiana grew during this time period, the company-built Highways, City and Neighborhood Streets and Airport Runways. With community growth, then came new parking lots and roadways for Business Parks, Schools, Churches and Shopping Malls. The Company provided stone placement, grading, excavating and hot mix asphalt paving services using mix from their five asphalt plants in the Central Indiana area.

During these years, many professional relationships were developed with general contractors, developers, state and municipal government entities, school and church administrations, and many of the businesses that make up the Central Indiana Corporate community.
By the early 1980’s, the company’s focus narrowed to stone base placement and asphalt paving. As Fritz’s sons, Bill and John, emerged as the next generation of corporate leadership, the company name was changed to Globe Asphalt Paving Company to reflect the new corporate direction.
Under this new name, Globe retained their business relationships for many of the same local companies, communities, and people that have been a part of Globe’s core relationship foundation throughout the years.
Brian Shumaker is now a part of the Globe corporate management team. He represents the 4th generation and the future of Shumaker company leadership…
As the community progresses, The Company has evolved, expanding their services and continuing to build their client base, working with the many new contractors and corporations that have now become a part of Central and Southeastern Indiana’s growth.
We’ve been able to achieve 90 years of success because of the support of our customers and the effort and skill of our employees.
We still practice and operate by the founding principles that were established in 1931.
